Breathing Tools for Presence, Heart Coherence, pH Balance, Healing Trauma & Reducing Anxiety

I recently attended a HeartMath workshop on heart coherence. I practiced Gay Hendricks’ YES Breath for a couple of minutes before being hooked up to the monitor – and lo and behold – I started off at 100% Coherence – this is a smooth, regular rhythm of heart beats that has been correlated with physical and emotional health and transmitting a field of love. No one else was anywhere near this high. I was surprised, and the presenter was surprised too. I tested my model – I thought stressful thoughts and quickly brought my coherence down to 60%, then went back to doing YES Breath (and presencing appreciation and love), and got it back up to ~90% in less than two minutes. YES Breath is powerful!!! Gay Hendricks is a world-renowned leader in the field of healthy breathing for good reason!
In this moment, I decided it was time to teach a breathing class.
[Warning – if you smoke, don’t come to this class – the breathing practices will deeply embed toxins in your lungs. Stop smoking first.]
I’ll teach you all the basics of YES Breath in a sitting position as well as how to do it standing and lying down. YES Breath is a form of belly breathing, and it is based on the rhythmic body motions that a fetus makes in the womb, similar to a rhythm of gentle waves on the beach. Breathing is guided by body movement, rather than the other way around (we made these movements in utero before we needed to breathe).
YES Breath is clearly great for generating a state of heart coherence! Regular practice of YES Breath (it really can be done anywhere and everywhere) shortens the time it takes us to get into a state of coherence (the “muscle” symbolically gets stronger). It also calms anxiety and PTSD by countering the body’s adrenaline response to fear (and vice versa).
When practicing YES Breath, it is common to notice patches of glitchy-ness or points in the cycle at which we regularly pause, shake, jar or otherwise impede smooth flow in our bodies and lungs. These occurrences point to places where we’ve stored trauma in our body. By learning to love these places, these glitchy patches, and gradually discovering how to breathe smoothly around and lovingly through them, we dissolve the tightness around the trauma and release the stored feelings and trauma itself.
We’ll also explore the Healing Breath. The Healing Breath restores a healthy pH balance in our body’s chemistry – promoting organ health, better digestion, healthier functioning of our immune system and increasing brain capacity with increased oxygen absorption. Gay regularly uses the Healing Breath to prevent getting sick (and recovering more quickly from everything he experiences – workouts, travel, surgery, etc.).
I’ll also add in the Cosmic Jiggle. Katie teaches this as a way to rest the body to a state of bliss. It creates a physical and energy wave through the body that is nourishing and soothing. It replenishes a state of awe and wellbeing that feels familiar, similar to a baby being held and rocked to sleep, sensing all is okay with the world.
This class is on the basics. There is so much more that we could cover in an advanced class as well.
